Why Port Arthur mattered before Tsushima

The campaign map shows how the fall of Port Arthur forced Russian reinforcements toward Vladivostok through the dangerous Tsushima Strait.

Notes

The campaign map makes Port Arthur's operational value to Russia clear during the Russo-Japanese War. The base offered the Second and Third Pacific Squadrons a possible destination that could be approached while remaining farther from Japan. Once Port Arthur had fallen, the reinforcements instead had to make for Vladivostok. That route forced them through the Tsushima Strait, turning the loss of a base into a decisive problem of naval geography.
