Reginald Tyrwhitt's upbringing and naval path

Tyrwhitt's family connections and difficult schooling offer a social history of naval entry, with a caution about later autobiographical memory.

Notes

Reginald Tyrwhitt was born on 10 May 1870 into the Oxford household of the Reverend Richard St John Tyrwhitt and Caroline York. The family history connects landed branches with clergy, scholars, lawyers, and naval and military officers. His own branch illustrates the comfortable professional and clerical background from which a naval officer could rise without inheriting a title. His sister Polly recalled rowing trips on flooded Port Meadow and mishaps around water, including a dive into a pool whose depth had not been properly checked. At the school that became the Dragon School, he was popular and a leader among his peers but academically unsuccessful, strong-willed, and difficult to manage. He moved to a naval crammer at twelve after a headmaster predicted a poor future. Tyrwhitt later enjoyed recalling that prediction, although the biography warns that the blunt wording remembered more than fifty years later was probably not the letter's exact wording.
