Typhoon-class size, prestige, and SSBN design

Modern ballistic-missile submarines approach Typhoon length, while the Soviet boat's extraordinary beam also served prestige and crew-comfort goals.

Question

Why have few submarines been built as large as the Russian Typhoon class?

Short answer

Other SSBNs are close in length, but Typhoon's exceptional beam mixed functional volume with Soviet prestige and unusually generous crew accommodations.

Notes

Borei and Columbia-class ballistic-missile submarines approach Typhoon's length but remain much narrower. The quoted dimensions are 175 by 23 meters for Typhoon, compared with 170 by 13.5 meters for Borei and 171 by 13 meters for Columbia. In this interpretation, Typhoon's exceptional size served Soviet prestige as well as operational capability. Its extra volume accommodated pools, saunas, and hot tubs. Later submarines could improve crew comfort without reproducing that level of opulence.
