A Type XXI coastal campaign might have multiplied disruption

A brief counterfactual asks whether advanced German submarines could have caused greater logistical damage by attacking British coastal and cross-Channel traffic rather than distant Atlantic shipping.

Notes

This counterfactual starts from a tradeoff: concentrating U-boats in the open Atlantic moved them beyond some land-based air threats but also forced them to operate near the limits of their range. Type XXI and smaller advanced submarines might instead have been especially disruptive around Britain's coast and the Channel. A few sinkings in constrained waters could halt traffic for hours or days while escorts hunted the submarine and routes were cleared. The argument distinguishes ships sunk from the wider delay imposed on a distribution network.
