What happened to the Type XVII Walter boats?

The small Type XVII inventory limited Allied trials, while HMS Meteorite allowed Britain to assess experimental propulsion alongside its own work.

Question

Why were the Type XVII Walter submarines not part of the mass scuttling?

Short answer

Too few examples remained for extensive testing. Some were scuttled and later salvaged, while Britain tested HMS Meteorite alongside its own experimental designs.

Notes

The small Type XVII inventory left too few boats for extensive testing. Two boats had been scuttled at Cuxhaven, and examples allocated to Britain and the United States were salvaged after Potsdam. Britain tested HMS Meteorite while continuing its own experiments and building the Explorer class. Meteorite was decommissioned by September 1949 and is recalled here as unpopular in Royal Navy service.
