Japan's Type 4 rocket seeks defensive depth

Japan's Type 4 incendiary rocket tried to buy capital ships space to manoeuvre by confronting attackers with a wall of flame.

Notes

Japan pursued the Type 4 as an answer to weak anti-aircraft performance and an increasing shortage of pilots. Its intended effect was psychological as well as physical: force aircraft to avoid a bright, fiery barrier and give carriers or battleships room to operate. Logistics and infrastructure can function only when defended forces retain enough space to employ their primary capabilities. Carriers needed room and favourable wind for flight operations, while battleships needed freedom to manoeuvre and use their main armament. The Type 4 was an attempt to manufacture that defensive depth with a frightening wall of flame.
