The Type 96 light anti-aircraft problem

The 25 mm Type 96 combined short effective range, reliability problems, and inadequate practical fire volume against fast-closing aircraft.

Notes

The Type 96 25 mm gun was regarded by Japan as its most reliable light anti-aircraft weapon, yet it had severe practical limits. Its useful engagement range was roughly one to two kilometres, and an average kill could demand about 1,500 rounds. Even a triple mounting firing about 330 effective rounds per minute could not deliver that volume before a fast aircraft crossed the engagement zone. The weakness illustrates how limited industrial and financial depth forced the navy to accept a weapon it could not readily replace.
