Type 72 development moved quickly. Work began around 1932, aircraft trials followed by 1933, and a set was installed on a carrier by 1936, although the first ship remains disputed among Ark Royal, Courageous, and Furious. Engineers had to design both the shipboard transmitter and an aircraft receiver robust enough for service. The progression from Type 72X through 72DM and later 72DP records repeated iteration before and during the early war years.
