CAMM frees Type 45 cells for Aster 30

Separate CAMM launchers take over point defence on Type 45 destroyers, allowing the original Sylver cells to concentrate on longer-range Aster 30 missiles.

Question

Can the reused Type 45 CAMM launchers take CAMM-ER, and would they need it?

Short answer

CAMM-ER compatibility is doubted, but the longer-range missile is considered unnecessary here because Aster already provides that layer.

Notes

Compatibility between the reused launchers and CAMM-ER remains uncertain. CAMM-ER would be more useful on a ship whose only air-defence family was CAMM. On Type 45, ordinary CAMM takes over the Aster 15 point-defence role. The forty-eight Sylver cells can then concentrate on Aster 30 for the longer-range layer.
