Type 31 magazine depth and fleet resupply

Type 31's missile load supports its task-group role, while repeated attacks raise the wider problem of replacing expended missiles at sea.

Question

Could Type 31's magazine depth be inadequate for a long engagement?

Short answer

Its load is reasonable for its role, but the wider fleet problem is that vertical-launch cells cannot presently be replenished at sea.

Notes

Type 31 is not expected to conduct a prolonged operation alone, so its magazine must be judged within a task group. Mark 41 cells carrying quad-packed Sea Ceptor would provide useful depth for an environment such as the Red Sea. Sustaining repeated attacks remains a fleet-wide problem because the proposed force cannot replenish its vertical-launch cells at sea. One suggested solution is to send uncrewed missile-carrying craft alongside the combatants. Crewed ships could then reserve their own missiles for heavy engagements or periods when those accompanying magazines had been exhausted.
