Type 281, PPI, and wartime radar maturity

Type 281 variants added surface-gunnery support, powered rotation, and plan-position displays, but early installations reveal how unevenly radar matured across the fleet.

Notes

Type 281 began as an air-defence radar that could support surface gunnery through a precision ranging panel. Early sets aboard HMS Dido and Prince of Wales suffered enough problems to give the design a poor first impression. Later 281B, BP, and BQ variants added improvements including powered rotation and plan-position indication. Radar remained a developing family of compromises, with effective fleet use maturing around 1941-42. A national set can appear superior when compared only in its strongest category, while another metric may favour a different design. Useful comparison therefore has to consider role, maturity, the number of workable sets that reached the fleet, and headline performance.
