Type 281 made radar a more usable fleet tool

Type 281 added long-range warning and useful surface-ranging functions, with later sets improving plotting and antenna handling.

Notes

Type 281 developed from Type 79 as a long-range warning set with a secondary surface-ranging and gunnery role. It used separate hand-rotated antennas, different pulse settings, and range panels that could pass useful data into fire-control systems. The Type 281B consolidated the equipment, while the BQ added power rotation and a plan-position indicator for plotting. Its usefulness depended on how the set fitted into command and fire control as much as on its headline detection range.
