Type 1934A bow changes and lost design experience

Successive bow revisions sought better stability and handling while Germany rebuilt design experience interrupted after Versailles.

Notes

Further studies and tank tests led to Type 1934A bow changes while the original Type 1934s were still being built. Z5 to Z16 received an angular forecastle sheer strake and a more pronounced slope in the bow plating. The comparison of drawings follows the original Z1 to Z4 shape through a later raised, more curved bow that still fell short of a full Atlantic bow. Z4's altered forward hull by 1945 shows how far the revisions continued. These changes sought a combination of stability, speed and maneuverability. The interruption of facilities and experienced personnel after Versailles made it harder to develop ideas already being explored for large torpedo boats in the 1910s.
