Two VLS standards complicate Chinese missile compatibility

Different launcher dimensions and launch arrangements complicate missile allocation across Chinese destroyers and frigates.

Notes

The Type 052D has 64 GJB 5860-2006 launch cells in forward and aft banks. Each cell reportedly supports hot or cold launch through a concentric canister arrangement with its own exhaust vents. Its stated 850 mm width exceeds the roughly 638 mm width given for Mark 41, while three available cell depths accommodate different missile sizes. The earlier Type 054A frigate uses a separate hot-launch system with 650 mm cells. Operating both standards complicates the efficient allocation of missiles across the fleet. Reported quad-packing of shorter-range missiles would increase the number of weapons carried within suitable cells.
