Why peacetime commitments imply twenty-four escorts

A rule-of-three rotation turns standing deployments into a much larger escort requirement before fleet training is counted.

Notes

The rule of three assigns every escort on station another in preparation or refit and a third traveling or recovering. Applying that rotation to the Royal Navy's stated standing tasks produces a requirement for twenty-four escorts before collective fleet training is counted. Ships conducting solo presence missions cannot by themselves maintain all the experience needed for coordinated carrier-group or fleet warfare. A separate core must therefore train together and circulate that expertise when personnel move between ships. The arithmetic shows why a visible deployment is supported by several less visible hulls at home or in transit.
