Why sustained turbine speed mattered beyond battle

Sustained high-speed steaming connects machinery choice to interception, coastal raids, fleet basing, and the Royal Navy's ability to concentrate force.

Notes

Turbines offered prolonged high-speed steaming as well as a favorable trial figure. That endurance widened the options for interception, interdiction, sea-lane defense, and power projection. The discussion uses German raids on southeast England to compare the distance from German bases with British bases at Scapa Flow and Rosyth. British turbine endurance improved the chance of catching a sortie, and German high-power radio transmissions often warned the Admiralty early enough for the Grand Fleet to put to sea before the High Seas Fleet. Slower British ships could have forced a major force south to Chatham and the Thames estuary. The resulting dispersal would weaken fleet concentration, making machinery endurance a force-structure and basing issue.
