The long-lived naval threat of the Badger bomber family

The Tu-16 and H-6K illustrate a bomber concept that remains relevant across decades, while the 1950s threat still depends heavily on bombs and nuclear delivery.

Notes

The Tu-16 Badger and H-6K show how an aircraft concept can remain part of naval air-defence planning for roughly seventy years. The later aircraft differs substantially from its ancestor despite that lineage. In the 1950s, the early missiles associated with these bombers are judged less capable than their frightening new reputation suggests. The more immediate concern is the bomber's ability to deliver heavy weapons, including nuclear bombs, at speed and over distance. Faster and longer-ranged delivery makes those weapons more dangerous while the defensive systems needed to meet them are still entering service.
