Towing torpedo craft to Tsushima reduced training

Short-ranged Russian torpedo craft needed towing and support on the voyage to Tsushima, restricting realistic drills for the towed ships and their escorts.

Notes

Most of the vessels called destroyers at Tsushima required towing and support on the voyage because they could not carry enough fuel. Time under tow prevented normal maneuvering, steaming, and gunnery practice. Releasing them for occasional drills did not reproduce the continuous experience available to ships steaming independently. Towing also constrained the ships towing them, which could not execute battle maneuvers without risking the tow.
