Chapter · 40:18-44:41

Asahi at Tsushima

Asahi fired more twelve-inch shells than any ship at Tsushima while supporting Mikasa against Russian flagships and the Borodino class.

Notes

Returning from mine-damage repairs, Asahi followed Mikasa into the decisive battle and initially engaged Knyaz Suvorov with support from armored cruiser Azuma. The pairing shows the Six-Six Fleet concept still operating at the center of the Japanese formation, with battleships and armored cruisers fighting together. After Tōgō crossed the Russian line, the damaged Suvorov wandered between the fleets while its steering was repaired, and Asahi shifted fire to Borodino and Oryol. She expended 142 twelve-inch shells, the highest total in the battle, while six hits caused no significant damage to her. Her casualties were seven killed and twenty-four wounded, a small part of the total Japanese losses. Royal Navy observer Captain William Pakenham watched from a deck chair on Asahi's quarterdeck and recorded the action, making the ship an important source for British reporting on the battle.
