HMS Birmingham's close-range warning at Tsingtao

HMS Birmingham's six-inch guns and torpedoes made the locally outnumbered cruiser dangerous while the fleets behind her raised the cost of escalation.

Notes

At Tsingtao, HMS Birmingham represented more than distant naval strength. Only a small sloop backed her locally, but at close range her many six-inch guns and torpedoes could seriously damage at least three Japanese heavy cruisers. The British weapons covered cruiser bridges and a shore headquarters while Japanese guns pointed back, so any escalation would be immediately costly. Japan had to weigh both the tactical danger in the harbour and the Mediterranean and Home Fleets that could follow.
