Chapter · 3:00-10:14

Tsingtao 1939 is not a sandbox carrier duel

The opening frames the January 1939 Tsingtao scenario around diplomacy, geography, and timing rather than an instant Royal Navy versus IJN carrier battle.

Notes

An artificial duel between the 1939 Royal Navy and Japanese carrier forces strips away the conditions that would decide how they fought. In daylight that contest would favor Japan, while British training and aircraft for night operations would change the balance after dark. A top-trumps comparison also misses qualities such as the Swordfish's reliability, ease of maintenance, and ability to operate in many conditions. The Tsingtao incident predates the Tripartite Pact, Japanese access to French Indochina as a forward base, and the later Pacific War alignment. Carrier performance therefore depends on diplomacy, basing, coalition politics, and operational systems before aircraft statistics become decisive.
