Pressure on China's competing forces

Soviet action and stronger Allied support for the Nationalists would make it harder for Mao's forces to remain on the margins of the war.

Notes

China remains an active political force within the counterfactual. Soviet attacks on Japan and Allied supplies for the Nationalists would pressure Mao's Communist movement to participate more fully. Waiting could leave the Communists excluded from the military and political settlement produced by a successful coalition campaign. An external naval intervention could therefore alter internal Chinese incentives far beyond the immediate contest for ports and sea routes.
