Truxtun joins Enterprise in nuclear surface operations

Truxtun's namesake and one-ship nuclear design lead into repeated Enterprise service and the 1989 commemoration of Operation Sea Orbit.

Notes

Thomas Truxtun was a Revolutionary War privateer, one of the first six US Navy captains appointed by George Washington, and a commander of Constitution, Constellation, and President. His nuclear-powered namesake was the third one-ship nuclear surface-combatant class after Long Beach and Bainbridge and used the same D2G reactor type as Bainbridge. Truxtun spent substantial time with Enterprise, including plane-guard duties during carrier landing qualifications. In 1989 she joined Enterprise and the nuclear cruiser Arkansas for the twenty-fifth anniversary of Operation Sea Orbit.
