A truce leaves the Castilians operating as pirates

When a papal truce ends French payment, de la Cerda's profitable fleet continues attacking English commerce on its own account.

Notes

The mid-1350 settlement formally included the Castilians and stopped Philip VI's payments. The ships nevertheless retained enough resources and profit incentive to continue their attacks. This gave Edward III both an active maritime threat and forces already assembled despite the nominal peace. The episode shows how privatized naval violence could outlive the diplomacy that originally financed it.
