Triton's water samples serve Naval Academy traditions

Samples from remote waters could christen Naval Academy class rings and provide a tribute to the recently donated Triton Light.

Notes

Water collected during Triton's voyage could also support the US Naval Academy's ring dance. The ceremony christened the incoming senior midshipmen's class rings with water from the Seven Seas, and authentic samples from remote places were difficult to obtain. Beach also proposed a tribute to the Triton Light, a small-boat navigation light donated to the academy by the class of 1945. Collecting water gave the circumnavigation a connection to academy ceremonies as well as its research purposes.
