Triton's speed, endurance, and uncertain depth limits

Triton's published speeds and flexible twin-reactor machinery supported long-distance planning, while public hull descriptions permit only a qualified inference about additional diving depth.

Notes

Triton's two S4G reactors could supply either turbine, with each turbine driving a shaft and five-bladed propeller. Published speeds exceeded 30 knots on the surface and 27 knots submerged. Estimates for the Magellan route were roughly 56 days at 20 knots or 75 days at 15 knots, connecting the propulsion figures to the circumnavigation timetable. Nuclear endurance was listed as essentially unlimited. Public descriptions of the hull suggest unusually heavy construction, but the possibility that Triton could dive below her stated limits remains an inference that could be wrong if those descriptions omit relevant details.
