Triton entered service as an SSRN in 1959 and became an SSN in 1961. A major refit ran from September 1962 to January 1964, yet she was decommissioned in May 1969. Her displacement was 5,963 long tons surfaced and 7,773 long tons submerged, making her substantially larger than the Japanese I-400 design. The comparison also places her alongside USS Argonaut to show how unusual her scale was within American submarine development. That size did not give her a long second career as an attack submarine.

A giant SSRN becomes a short-lived attack submarine
Triton's exceptional displacement contrasts with her short attack-submarine career after reclassification and a major refit.
