Triton's sensors, torpedo stowage, and manual handling

Six torpedo tubes gave Triton conventional attack armament, but a girder restricted weapon stowage and the crew had to handle torpedoes without power assistance.

Notes

Triton's later radar sacrificed capability for greater suitability to her changed role. Her equipment also included active and passive sonar, a Mark 101 fire-control system, and six 21-inch Mark 60 torpedo tubes, four forward and two aft. Normal stowage was ten torpedoes forward, usually Mark 37s, and five aft. Her captain pointed out that removing one support girder could double forward stowage to twenty, supporting the interpretation that the hull contained substantial structural margins. The tubes launched hydraulically, but their handling equipment lacked power assistance, so moving the weapons required muscle. Both reactors occupied opposite ends of one compartment, while the engines had their own compartments.
