Chapter · 1:22:11-1:26:27

Triton and caution before engaging an unknown enemy

Triton's captain prioritizes action and rescue while his first officer questions whether their familiar assumptions fit the unknown attackers.

Notes

Triton finds two unfamiliar spacecraft above a devastated colony, with possible weapons its officers do not recognize. Titus Barnes questions the assumption that they are ordinary pirates because their silence and destruction of the settlement do not fit the expected behavior. He wants closer scans to establish their weapons and defenses before committing to combat. The captain allows data collection during the approach but presses ahead because survivors need help. Reinforcement by two destroyers reassures the captain without resolving Titus's concern that the attack could be a weapons test intended to draw in naval opposition. Numerical superiority offers little reassurance when the enemy's capabilities and purpose remain unknown.
