Why did warship designers move away from tripod masts?
Short answerThey were better than lattice masts, but remained awkward to protect and carried weight high in the ship.
NotesThe tripod mast was better than a lattice mast, yet it remained an awkward compromise. Its weight was easier to tolerate on ships with smaller superstructures, but that did not solve every design problem. Protection was particularly difficult. Later arrangements offered more useful ways to balance structural support, topweight and protection.
