Triple turrets and the prewar naval race

British twin-turret conservatism may have reflected a desire to avoid unnecessary escalation with Germany as the naval race widened into a technology contest.

Notes

The lack of British triple turrets may require explanation as much as the technology itself. One suggested rationale is deterrence: Britain could match German twin-turret ships without escalating to an arrangement it did not need for superiority. The naval race may then have shifted from an Anglo-German construction contest toward technological competition among Britain, the United States, Italy, and Japan. South American orders complicate that picture because their battleships could be especially large and capable. This remains an interpretive question rather than a settled causal account.
