Would triple 15-inch turrets make Arabis and Abercrombie-class monitors much more dangerous?
Short answerThey would add firepower for shore targets, but would require a larger ship and still would not make a monitor effective in fleet combat.
NotesA triple 15-inch turret would improve the monitor's ability to fire a three-shell ranging salvo and increase the weight delivered against shore targets. It would not turn the ship into an effective fleet combatant because monitors remained slow, lightly protected, and poorly suited to manoeuvring against warships. The extra gun, ammunition, and barbette would also require a wider and somewhat longer hull. Most importantly, monitor construction relied on mountings already available from other programmes. An existing twin turret could put a useful bombardment ship into service sooner than designing and manufacturing a new triple mount.
