The cruiser and her escorts fight German destroyers while protecting convoy PQ 13, and Trinidad helps destroy Z26. The German Type 1936A destroyers are often given the loose 'Narvik' label, although the later 1936B ships are argued to fit it better. Trinidad launches torpedoes while zigzagging against submarine and destroyer attack. One torpedo runs below its expected 46-knot speed, so Trinidad's next evasive turn carries her across its path. The hit kills 32 men and badly damages the ship, but she remains under power in Arctic waters and reaches Murmansk. HMS Fury destroys U-378 when the submarine attempts to finish her. The accident arose from an unexpectedly slow weapon crossing an otherwise sensible evasive course during a confused surface action.
