Landing craft and helicopter traffic make an amphibious assault ship difficult to conceal once operations begin. Its need to operate near a hostile coast can also place it within range of shore-launched anti-ship missiles. Trieste therefore combines three OTO 76 mounts with 25 mm remote weapons, Aster-capable vertical launch cells, sensors, and decoys. That layered fit reflects force scarcity: modern navies no longer field enough amphibious ships to treat them as cheap, expendable transports.

Trieste's layered defenses protect a visible amphibious target
The LHD Trieste uses three 76 mm guns alongside smaller cannon, missiles, sensors, and decoys because amphibious operations expose a scarce, visible ship to coastal attack.
