Chapter · 1:46:07-1:50:50

Tribute and letters carried the threat north

Ports prepared tribute while Ayaz and Almeida exchanged letters that mixed prisoner welfare, respect, and an explicit threat to Diu.

Notes

At Chaul, Almeida ordered the governor to prepare tribute for the fleet's return from Diu. Farther north, Ayaz sent letters from the Portuguese prisoners confirming that they were well treated and praised Lourenço as a brave opponent. Almeida replied that he was coming for Husayn's men and would make Diu pay if Ayaz continued to assist them. The viceroy's membership in Portugal's Order of Christ added a military-religious institution to a message otherwise driven by coercion and personal revenge.
