Early wartime Tribal destroyers joined the 18th Cruiser Squadron in the North Sea and North Atlantic. The force watched for German warships trying to break into the Atlantic. Assigning the Tribals to a cruiser squadron carried the prewar substitute-cruiser idea into combat operations. This role connected fleet patrols directly to the protection of Atlantic trade.
