Operation Claymore used Tribal destroyers as self-contained raiding ships

During Operation Claymore, space for troops and heavy gun armament let Tribal destroyers support a major early commando raid without a large escorting force.

Notes

The Tribals' internal space and gun power made them especially useful during Operation Claymore, the first major commando operation in this account. They carried the raiding troops, put them ashore, and provided fire support during the attack. A single destroyer could cover several roles, so the Royal Navy needed fewer specialist supporting ships. Operation Claymore put the general-purpose design to work beyond its usual torpedo and screening duties.
