The Tribals and J class offered two answers to the same fleet problem. Tribals emphasized gun power against enemy destroyers, while the J design retained strong guns but used the saved weight and space for a ten-torpedo broadside. The J class removed the aft Y-position twin 4.7-inch mounting, preserving X mounting's better firing arcs, and dispensed with the Tribal design's small second funnel. As a complementary design, it gave the force much greater torpedo weight once the gun-heavy Tribals had helped it close the range. The same ten-torpedo emphasis also appeared in the first T-class submarines.

How the J class complemented the Tribal class
The J class traded one Tribal twin-gun mounting for a second quintuple torpedo launcher, making the two designs complementary parts of a destroyer force.
