Tribal destroyers and the need for fleet reserves

Wide commitments required overlapping combat capability to replace losses and keep essential fleet duties covered.

Notes

A fleet needed reserves for missions expected to consume ships, especially offensive destroyer attacks. Critical duties also needed backup because enemy action could remove the ships assigned to them. Escort, supporting gunfire, and protection for other destroyers continued to demand hulls while the main fighting took place. The Tribal class supplied overlapping capabilities that helped the Royal Navy cover those duties across a wide range of commitments.
