Why general-purpose capability consumed the Tribals

The Tribals anticipated later general-purpose warships, and their rare combination of guns, torpedoes, depth charges, speed, and capacity drew them into repeated high-risk missions.

Notes

The Tribal class anticipated later general-purpose surface combatants decades before missile destroyers made the idea familiar. Their gun power, torpedoes, depth charges, magazines, speed, and space for commandos supported escort, bombardment, surface actions, submarine hunting, and raids. That versatility also explains the class's heavy losses: commanders repeatedly assigned the Tribals to high-risk work because few other destroyers combined enough firepower and capacity to do it. A successful multi-role design could face danger more often because it was useful in more situations.
