The first British destroyer attack at Narvik sent H-class destroyers into a reconnaissance mission that Tribal crews considered their own responsibility. Their anger was not a wish for pointless losses but a belief that the larger Tribals existed to absorb precisely that risk and protect the smaller destroyers. When the call went out for the next attack, Cossack, Eskimo, and the other available Tribals drove hard to reach the force in time. Cossack was commanded by Robert Sherbrooke, whose later defense of an Arctic convoy while severely wounded is used to illustrate the leadership culture already present aboard the class.
