Why Hood lacked Tribal-class destroyers at Denmark Strait

Fast fleet destroyers that might normally accompany Hood were already committed to convoy escort and other Home Fleet duties.

Notes

The Battle of the Denmark Strait gives a concrete example of escort demand reshaping fleet operations. Tribal-class destroyers were fast and seaworthy enough to accompany Hood in poor weather. They were absent because convoy protection and other Home Fleet duties had already claimed them. That allocation left a major warship without the destroyer screen a reader might otherwise expect. Hood's missing screen makes the tradeoff between commerce protection and battle-fleet support visible.
