How the Tribal class turned reputation into forward presence

The Tribal destroyer's elite reputation gave it diplomatic weight, encouraging the Royal Navy to keep early technical problems out of public view.

Notes

Presence depends partly on the perceived status of the ship that arrives. A Tribal-class destroyer could carry more diplomatic weight than some cruisers because the Royal Navy deliberately presented the class as an elite, hard-fighting force. Archival Vickers material nevertheless records early stabilization and twin-mount problems that required correction. Keeping those difficulties quiet protected the public image on which the class's presence value depended and helps explain later conservatism toward unproven quadruple cruiser turrets.
