Chapter ยท 7:24-9:22

Tribal-class destroyers as instruments of naval diplomacy

The Tribal class quickly took on diplomatic and independent roles, often appearing with Town-class cruisers and serving during the Spanish Civil War.

Notes

Tribal-class destroyers became visible instruments of British policy before World War II. The examples include Turkey, a visit involving the Ashanti in Africa, and other destinations where Britain wanted to send a political message. A Town-class cruiser sometimes accompanied them, adding more visible force to a friendly visit. Service during the Spanish Civil War then put the same ships to work during an international crisis. These deployments show the cruiser-like role in practice: independent movement, political presence, and useful work away from a fleet battle.
