Destroyer personnel needed cross-training because a small ship could not absorb casualties by simply replacing a specialist with spare hands. If a torpedo crew was lost, sailors drawn from another duty, potentially including engineering, still had to keep the weapon usable in combat. Tribal crews were also expected to screen task forces, lead reconnaissance, suppress enemy destroyers for torpedo attacks, fight at night, and perform cruiser-like diplomatic or command duties. This demanding doctrine reinforced the class's elite identity and willingness to take risks.
