The Tribal class as a family of wartime ships

Martin H. Bryce's Tribal-class history shows how destroyers built to a common design developed individual identities during a punishing war.

Notes

Martin H. Bryce's The Tribals is recommended as a strong starting point for the class before the video turns to Admiral Sir Derek Holland-Martin's foreword. Holland-Martin connects Tartar and Nubian to his own command experience, including more than two years with Nubian in the Mediterranean. The class suffered severe losses: Nubian was the only one of the first eight Tribals still afloat after the autumn of 1942. Holland-Martin argues that nominally identical ships developed identities of their own through Atlantic gales, Arctic convoys, Mediterranean action, Indian Ocean monsoons, and Pacific service. His account treats the class as a family of individual ship biographies shaped by overwork, loss, danger, and the companionship of a confident crew.
