Why the Tribal design suited Vian's box formation

Rear-firing guns let the four Tribals attack inward from every corner, while interwar tactical development made the formation a practiced method rather than an improvisation.

Notes

The box formation depended on the Tribal class's substantial rear-facing armament, which let the forward ships fire back toward the enclosed enemy. The method grew from First World War cruiser work and interwar development associated with Philip Vian and Rear Admiral Destroyers Cunningham. This tactical thinking appears to have influenced the Tribal design, although surviving manuals do not fully describe the formation. Piorun's reserve role shows both shared training and close Polish-British operational integration.
