Tribal-class Bofors plans and a possible hybrid mount

Selecting Bofors for the Tribal class could have advanced British production; a separate suggestion for a mixed eight-gun mount survives only in a recollection of private notes.

Notes

Bofors guns were an option for the Tribal class from about 1937, and selecting them could have brought British production forward. Imported examples entered British service in 1941, followed by British-produced guns in 1942. Alex Clarke recalls a suggestion for four Bofors and four Pom-Poms on one mount in family-preserved personal notes written by someone involved in the work. He cannot establish whether anyone else discussed it or whether it remained that individual's private idea. Combining Bofors range with Pom-Pom rate of fire was attractive, but a mixed mount would complicate maintenance and ammunition supply.
