Why revolutionary Trees of Liberty kept dying

Many Trees of Liberty died because revolutionaries discarded estate knowledge while opponents attacked the new regime's symbol.

Notes

Trees of Liberty appeared as revolutionary symbols in France, the Batavian Netherlands, and elsewhere, yet many died soon after planting. Traditional estate workers knew how to move mature trees without destroying their root bundles, but revolutionaries often rejected those methods as aristocratic and had removed many of the people who practiced them. Opponents also attacked the trees because they represented the new regime. Their failure illustrates the practical cost of purges: useful knowledge disappeared along with the people who held it.
