The Treasury Islands show local superiority against a thin garrison

New Zealand's 8th Brigade Group landed with Allied shipping and engineering support against a Japanese garrison too small to deny the islands.

Notes

New Zealand's 8th Infantry Brigade Group undertook the Treasury Islands assault in support of the Bougainville campaign. The 29th, 34th, and 36th Battalions used Allied landing vessels, with support from the US 87th Naval Construction Battalion. It was New Zealand's first amphibious assault since Gallipoli. A Japanese garrison of only a few hundred could resist locally but lacked the strength to cover the islands or throw the landing back. Remaining pockets took time to locate after the useful areas had been secured, without preventing the attackers from continuing their work.
